Stay focused in 2023

How to stay focused in 2023?

Staying focused at the start of the year usually means New Year Resolutions.

But, there’s so many areas to focus on  …more exercise, less alcohol, more healthy eating, more time with family etc.

And for me, these traditional resolutions don’t work …they feel stressful.

I much prefer a focus.

Just one or two words that are gentle reminders for me to stay on course.

It’s what I use with my coaching clients …we call them gentle nudges. They’re very specific to each client but generally, they’re intended to keep them focused and on track with their goals. I see them as gentle prods to remind them of something important.

It all starts with you. Book in for a quick call with me to discuss how you can benefit from coaching.

How I choose to stay focused

My word of the year is EASE.

It’s about:

  • easing myself into my day
  • being present
  • savouring the moments
  • choosing where I spend my energy (and with whom)
  • going with the flow
  • doing what makes me happy
  • doing things my way

It’s not about

  • stress
  • worry
  • rushing around
  • forcing things to happen
  • processing things for the sake of it
  • unconsciously following the trend

Helping you to stay focused

STEP 1: REFLECT

Reflect on the past year and ask yourself these questions. Don’t think too hard about the answers, it’s best to write down whatever comes up first in your head.

  • What could you use more of in your life?
  • What could you use less of in your life?
  • What accomplishments did you achieve last year?
  • What are the first three words that come to mind when you think about this year?
  • How do you want to feel this year? Think about how you want your morning routine to feel, how you want to feel at work or throughout the day, and how you want to feel right before you go to bed.

Think about the different elements of your life:

  • Relationships
  • Work
  • Physical Health
  • Wellness and Mental Health
  • Lifestyle and Hobbies
  • Life Milestones
  • Finance
  • Spiritual

STEP 2 CREATE A LIST

Spend some time looking back through your notes and start to make a list of the words that come to mind.

You’ll start to see themes from the words you’ve wrote. Do any of these words jump out at you? Remember to trust your instinct here, don’t over analyse the words, let them pick you!

STEP 3: COMMIT

Ask yourself if you’re going to ‘try’ living out your focus of the year, or if you’re actually going to ‘live’ it?

The word ‘try’ lends itself to having a go. I call it a fluffy non-committal word. It can happen when you do things for the sake of it, or just follow trends, which usually results in you not living out your intention, as you’re not fully committed.

On the other hand, if you’re going to ‘live’ it, this already sounds much more committed. It tends to mean there’s much more determination and ownership behind that decision, which results in you living out the intention.

As Yoda said, “do, or do not …there is no try!”

Staying focused is about intentions, not goals

Remember this isn’t about setting goals that you have to achieve by a certain time. It’s more about setting your intention so everything you do has a meaning behind it.

There’s no end point …it’s a journey!

So as I ease myself into the day …what are your thoughts?

Are you Team Resolutions or Team Focus?
