Have you ever had someone say to you: “It never occurred to me that you also face life’s ups and downs”?

This feedback hit home for me after I shared a personal challenge I was dealing with.

“I always saw you as this boundless source of inspiration and energy, and I never imagined you had your share of challenges. It’s as if I placed you on such a high pedestal of positivity that it never occurred to me that you also face life’s ups and downs.”

This feedback highlights a common misconception – assuming that someone who provides inspiration and positivity doesn’t experience challenges themselves. And that’s because, in an era of social media and carefully curated images, it’s easy for others to perceive our lives as picture-perfect.

My Gran used to say, “Don’t share your dirty laundry in public.” While I believe in maintaining a certain level of privacy, it’s crucial to remember that struggles, tough moments, and feelings of being lost or stuck in our own thoughts are experiences we all go through.

None of us are exempt.

Quote about how people make assumptions that if you are positive you don't face any challenges

How does this apply to you as an Executive or Leader?

Well, over the last 20 years, I’ve supported many Executives and Leaders who face challenges and then retreat into the solitude of their thoughts.

It’s not uncommon for this to happen.

The people around them assume they have it all together and can handle all challenges on their own. So no one asks if they need any support. This assumption, however, can have significant consequences, particularly for leaders.

Consider this: As an Executive or Leader you don’t want to admit you don’t have all the answers, so you turn inward, getting stuck in your own head. When you sit with your challenges like this, you retreat and disconnect from others. Therefore impacting negatively on yourself, those you lead, as well as your loved ones.

It can lead to feelings of isolation, a lack of fresh perspectives, missed opportunities for growth, burnout, and upset at home.

That’s why we need to challenge the idea that Executives and Leaders should always have it all together, or should never show vulnerability or seek support.

It’s a dangerous assumption. And it’s because of these assumptions that some Executives and Leaders hesitate to reach out for help and support when they need it the most.

Remember, leadership doesn’t mean you have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders alone. The 5th Principle in my “5 Principles of Great Leadership” is all about Leading with Balance. It’s about acknowledging that seeking support and sharing your experiences doesn’t diminish your leadership; it enhances it. It’s about embracing vulnerability.

Now, I encourage you to think about the impact of staying within your own head.

Is it helping you navigate challenges effectively, or is it causing isolation, missed opportunities, and upset at home?

A few years ago, I worked closely with a high-level Executive, let's call him John.

If you’re ready to take action, here’s an inspiring success story that highlights the transformation that can occur when Executives and Leaders embrace vulnerability by choosing to seek support and do the inner work.

John was known for his unwavering determination and a track record of delivering results. However, behind the scenes, he was facing an immense challenge. John’s organisation was undergoing a major transformation, and the pressure on him was tremendous. He felt the weight of responsibility on his shoulders, and it was taking a toll on his well-being.

Like many Executives and Leaders, he had fallen into the trap of believing he had to figure everything out on his own.

One day, during a coaching session with me, John opened up about his struggles.

He admitted that he often felt isolated and overwhelmed, unable to share his vulnerabilities with his team or even his family. The idea of seeking support from others at work, didn’t seem right to him, as he believed it might be seen as a sign of weakness.

We decided to embark on a journey of reflection together. And that’s because he made the decision to focus on the ‘internal stuff’  (e.g. his innermost thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and desires).

He realised if he wanted a different result, he had to do something different.

So, John began to explore his challenges, his goals, and his leadership style through a series of guided exercises and deep inner work. It was like shining a light on the areas of his life that needed attention.

As he delved deeper into this process, something remarkable happened. John started to recognise the power of vulnerability and collaboration. He realised that seeking support didn’t diminish his leadership; it enhanced it.

By opening up to his team about his challenges and involving them in finding solutions, he not only lightened his own burden but also fostered a culture of trust and innovation. This transformation didn’t stop at the workplace; it reached the lives of his loved ones too.

Fast forward a few months, and John’s organisation had not only weathered the storm of transformation but had emerged stronger than ever. Morale was high, and his team was more engaged and committed than before. John’s willingness to do the inner work, share his experiences, and seek support had been transformative, not just for him but for his entire organisation and his family.

Today, John continues to lead with authenticity and resilience, and he credits his willingness to seek support as a turning point in his leadership journey. John’s story is a powerful testament to the transformative potential of seeking support, doing the inner work, and embracing vulnerability as a leader, positively impacting not only his professional life but also his personal life and relationships.

Now, it's your turn to choose the path that resonates with you:

Option 1: Do the Inner Work

Reflection, for me, isn’t just sitting around and thinking quietly. It’s like taking a journey within yourself, a bit like being a detective trying to understand your own life. Life throws all sorts of surprises at us, and reflection helps us make sense of it all. Think of it as having a conversation with yourself, asking questions, and figuring things out.
